I remember the first time I heard of the HIV/AIDS virus, almost 30 years ago, when a Dutch missionary nurse in the forests of south-eastern Central African Republic described the mysterious disease whose killing effects were outstripping alcohol poisoning – for Soeur Léonie, one prevailing preventable causes of death in Africa. Soon after, we had our first safari cancellation from a hunter who was convinced that AIDS was spread by mosquitos; no amount of scientific research could convince him otherwise, and we lost the hunt.
